Abstract

We have calculated spin-wave frequencies of the dipolar modes in an exchange-coupled magnetic multilayer with a canted ground state. The system was described using an effective-medium theory that included a perpendicular anisotropy. Two bulk bands and two surface modes are found in the canted state that are sensitive to the magnitude of the perpendicular anisotropy. Our calculations suggest that a uniform in-plane magnetized state may become unstable in the presence of antiferromagnetic coupling for surprisingly small values of an out-of-plane anisotropy.
