Abstract

Nuclear many-body states composed of the wave functions of valence nucleons and the correlated 16O ground state determined in a multishell configuration mixing calculation are constructed. These states are used to renormalize the sd-shell interaction derived from a realistic nucleon-nucleon potential. The properties of this interaction are similar to the interaction which reproduces the correlated two-valence-nucleon spectrum. Used in sd-shell model space hamiltonians the renormalized interaction is found to produce spectra similar to the ones found in exact multishell calculations.
