Abstract

Integration of multi-microgrid to the existing distributed network have many benefits like, increasing the operational stability and raising the economic benefits. The multi-microgrid integration also possesses a lot of operational challenges such as flexible operation, bi-directional power flow and variable fault current. Due to these operational challenges, protection can be more vulnerable when multi-microgrid connects to the utility grid. In this article, voltage and current level is analysed at different locations of the multi-microgrid considering faults in multi-microgrid. This article introduces an alternative protection scheme based on current and voltage line parameters for multi-microgrid protection at grid-connected and islanded operational modes. The protection relays settings are updated according to operational mode. This protection scheme is reliable and highly sensitive to the bi-directional power flow among microgrid with adjacent microgrids and utility grid in the multi-microgrid network. This protection scheme tests in the multi-microgrid test system using simulation environment to verify the effectiveness and correctness of the proposed protection scheme.
