Abstract

In order to produce excellent engineers, we focus on developing the practical and innovating ability of senior students in mechanical engineering by using an effective project-oriented approach. At Southwest Jiaotong University, based on university–industry cooperation and professional support, students can be fully involved in ‘real world’ projects within industry. The main pedagogical objectives of this approach are: to improve the practical ability of students; to give them the opportunity to explore and solve problems with a real application; to deepen their understanding of the course; and to promote multidisciplinary work (mechanics, mechanical design, computer science and computer-aided design). The project is carried out by different groups of students and is organized by professors at the university. In order to present the process of the teaching approach, a typical case is reported. With this project-based approach, the various abilities of undergraduate students can be improved, and they can be better adapted to the needs of prospective employers.
