Abstract

We compute the effective potential for the Wilson line at nonzero temperature to one loop order in the standard model. Besides the usual perturbative vacua, there are metastable states in the direction of U(1) hypercharge. Assuming that the universe starts out in such a metastable state at the Planck scale, it easily persists to the scale of electroweak symmetry breaking, where it serves as a source of C P violation - as required for the generation of baryon number asymmetry - that is naturally of order one.
