Abstract

Flower visitors of the bromeliad Aechmea lindenii (E Morren) Baker exhibiting an ornithophilous floral syndrome were studied in a secondary Atlantic forest at Santa Catarina Island. During the spring season flower visiting animals of 21 species belonging to one bird and eight arthropod orders were observed on 80 plants. The orchid bee Euglossa annectans Dressler 1982, the stingless bee Plebeia droryana (Friese 1900) and the hummingbird Thalurania glaucopis Gmelin 1788 were the most frequent visitors. The latter was found to be an efficient pollinator, followed by the large and long-tongued bumble and carpenter bees. Therefore, this bromeliad species evidently uses mixed pollination as a reproductive strategy, resulting in redundancy in the ecosystem service provided by hummingbirds and bees.
