Abstract

This paper presents the placement of Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) and Distributed Generation (DG) effectively in radial distribution system. The advantage of UPQC over other D-FACTS devices is it has both shunt and series compensators so that voltage profile can be improved and power loss can be reduced more effectively. The UPQC which injects series complex power and shunt reactive power is used in this paper. The candidate bus is selected using three factors Loss Sensitivity Factor (LSF), Power Loss Index (PLI), Voltage Stability Index (VSI). The size of UPQC is found by modelling series and shunt compensators at candidate bus. The size of DG is found by variation technique at candidate bus. UPQC and DG are simultaneously placed in IEEE 33 bus system to improve voltage profile (VP) and to reduce power loss (PL).
