Abstract
The topic “Effective National Language Policy” is discussed from the Nigerian perspective. The author looks at the history of language policy in Nigeria, particularly the various effort made by linguists and the Federal Government in policy formulation and implementation. The paper presents the Nigerian worrisome linguistic situation, particularly the current state of her indigenous languages and the notes the challenges posed by the multilingual nature of the country, and the threats posed by globalization, especially the issue of language endangerment. The author the presents some types of policy seems to be suitable for Nigeria. The paper concludes that effective language policy. The way forward is the suggested.
