Abstract

The algorithm of Helfferich to derive the general yield ratio and rate equations for multistep homogeneous reactions with simple nodes and loops is extended to cope with reaction networks with branches from nodes and nonsimple networks. Systematically using the Bodenstein approximation of quasi-stationary behavior of reaction intermediates and network reduction technique, the yield ratio and rate equations are readily compiled for networks of arbitrary configuration and complexity. The applications of the algorithm are illustrated by some homogeneous reactions.
