Abstract

This study examined the influence of effective ICT skills on the use of electronic information resources by lecturers in Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Rumuola, Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The population of the study consisted of 276 lecturers. However, the study sampled 164 lecturers determined through the use of Prof Taro Yemane sample size formula. Appropriately, the study used 147 of the lecturers validly found to be useful and relevant and this represents 90% response rate. The study adopted survey research design and used both descriptive and inferential statistical tools to analyze the data and test the hypothesis of study. Findings from the study revealed that a high level of ICT skills and a high level of electronic information resources are available in tertiary institutions. The top notable purposes of electronic information resources as indicated by the sampled lecturers were to update knowledge/research, to share knowledge, for publication of journal/articles, for writing of thesis/dissertation among many others. The study also, found conclusively that effective ICT skills significantly influence electronic information resources used by lecturers in tertiary institutions. The study recommends that the e-library unit of tertiary institutions should exploit the selective dissemination of information to attract all the academic staff to different forms of information resources and databases available on the library portal. Also, tertiary school management should provide fund through TETFUND and other means for subscription of more scholarly electronic information resources database in order to build a strong collection of e-resources in the library for usage by the lecturers.
