Abstract

A method of irreducible tensor operators is applied to construct effective Hamiltonians for non-Kramers ion pairs, taking a PrCl 3 crystal as an example. The exact effective Hamiltonian for the non-Kramers ion pairs can be derived by extending the theory given for a single non-Kramers ion. It is shown that these Hamiltonians involve the effects of electric multipole and magnetic dipole interactions as well as those of exchange interaction. Some remarks on the effective Hamiltonian for ion pairs are given. Finally, the experimental data on PrCl 3 and Pr 3+ ions in lanthanum ethyl sulfate and in LaCl 3 are discussed briefly.
