Abstract

The dominant contributions in inclusive electron-nucleus scattering in the quasi-elastic region (0.1 < Q 2 < 1.0 GeV 2/ c 2) are single nucleon knock-out and delta excitation. Using γ-scaling “single nucleon” properties can be studied. The magnetic moment of a nucleon in a nucleus shows a considerable increase over the free nucleon magnetic moment, while the charge radius shows much less increase. This is compared with the behavior of these quantities for different spinors for the quarks in the nucleons. Several shortcomings of the single nucleon knock-out picture can be understood from short distance nucleon-nucleon correlations, which in this paper are treated with the help of six-quark hadronic states.
