Abstract
We have developed an effective field theory based on the Singwi, Tosi, Land, and Sj\"olander approximation for the density-density response function to investigate the properties of hard-sphere fluids. Simple analytical expressions are provided for the effective potential, the static structure factor, the Fourier transform of the direct correlation function, and the isothermal compressibility. From the hydrodynamic theory, we have also calculated the collective modes. Our results are in good agreement with those obtained from molecular dynamics simulations at intermediate densities. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
