Abstract

An extension of effective field theories for finite systems with``emergent symmetry breaking'' shows how symmetry arguments aloneyield the universal features of the low-lying excitations. Applied tothe structure of nonspherical atomic nuclei, some well-known resultsemerge from a new perspective, such as the nuclear vibrations that arethe heads of rotational bands.
