Abstract

By combining the Pade approximant and the coherent-anomaly method, the equation of state in the liquid region for a hard-core system is obtained from the virial series expansion. The effective exclusive volume is found to be equal to the volume of the hard core. The fact that this volume is less than the close-packing volume suggests the existence of the liquid-solid phase transition (the Alder transition) in two- and three-dimensional hard-core systems.
