Abstract

Abstract This chapter examines the skill of effective communication in public health. It defines and discusses the role effective communication plays in the context of social and behavior-change communication in public health. It explores key factors, such as empathy, storytelling, cultural humility, community, key group participation, engagement, equity, and other core concepts, for effective public health communication. Using models and examples, it provides recommendations for how effective communication skills can be used to combat the effects of misinformation in public health, an issue that has been made acutely obvious during the COVID-19 pandemic. Armed with strategies and considerations for effective communication, the public health professional can develop an effective communication framework tailored for systems with changes required or needs that are unmet.
