Abstract
This chapter provides a broad overview of what constitutes effective sports coaching. It identifies, explains and contextualises the skills, qualities, roles and responsibilities of the coach. The chapter outlines the ethics and the code of conduct by which the sports coach should abide and provides examples of codes of conduct for sports coaches in Canada, the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (U.S.A.). Adaptation and differentiation will be explained, with practical examples provided along with definitions of effective communication and instruction. The coach, throughout their career, will learn a range of skills and develop a range of qualities. A further skill that the coach needs to develop is the ability to observe, monitor and accurately assess performance in training and competition. The coach should also be good at planning, as training plans must be delivered, and it is a fundamental skill that will be developed and honed, through experience, over a period of time.
