Abstract
The authors propose an effective bandwidth approach to connection admission control in ATM networks. The aggregate arrival traffic is accurately modelled by a two-state Markov modulated Poisson process (MMPP) via the matching of four important statistics. If the buffer is large, admission control can be achieved by computing the effective bandwidth of the two-state MMPP. Simulation tests show that the approach is simple and results in higher utilisation compared with conventional methods.
