Abstract
Applying the recently developed method of the on-shell expansion of the effective action, a compact equation is derived in the framework of the quantum electrodynamics which determines the energy levels of the hydrogen-, helium- and lithium-like atoms. Since they are derived systematically, our method provides a transparent formal derivation of the equations which includes the full order corrections.
