Abstract

GUTOWSKA et al. (1943) reported that high producing hens had a higher level of alkaline phosphatase in serum than low producers. This finding prompted a study to obtain further information on this relationship and to determine if egg production would be increased by selection solely for increased alkaline phosphatase level in serum.Some of the results have already been reported (Wilcox et al., 1962, 1963; Wilcox, 1963). A positive correlation between alkaline phosphatase level of adult hens and egg production was observed, as well as a positive genetic correlation but no phenotpic correlation between phosphatase level at six weeks of age and egg production. Progress was rapid in development of a high phosphatase line by selective breeding for enzyme level at six weeks of age.
