Abstract

The effects of feeding Withania somnifera (aswgandh) root on the mating behavior litter size and fertility in mice were investigated. Male and female mice received 25 mg of the root powder daily for 10 days. After this period the mice were paired for mating. Treatment delayed mating by 1 day decreased the litter size from 5.2 to 3 and decreased the fertility rate by 25%. It is unknown whether the infertile mating was due to the effect on male or female but the probable presence of an oral contraceptive principle in Withania somnifera root is suggested.
