Abstract

The branches of the giant cactus Backebergia militaris contain at least one biologically active compound, corresponding to an alkaloid. This activity was not dependent on cactus age. Methanol crude extracts of B. militaris showed a clear inhibitory effect on rabbit intestinal smooth muscle contractility. The inhibitory activity was concentration-dependent, and reversible upon removal of the extract from the medium. B. militaris extract did not display any anticholinergic action on the rabbit intestine. Copyright © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
