Abstract

This paper deals with a major effect of ytterbium on microstructure, electrical and dielectric properties, and aging characteristics of ZVM (ZnO–V2O5–Mn3O4) system. With the amount of the ytterbium increased, the average grain size decreased from 7.2 to 5.9 µm, whereas the density of the sintered pellets increased from 5.39 to 5.55 g/cm3. The breakdown field increased from 922 to 3774 V/cm with the increase of the amount of the ytterbium. The nonlinear coefficient exhibited a maximum value (29.2) at 0.025 mol% and a minimum value (5.7) at 0.25 mol% in the amount of the ytterbium. The sample added with 0.1 mol% Yb2O3 exhibited the highest stability; variation rates for the breakdown field and the nonlinear coefficient were 0.7% and − 4.2%, respectively, after application of a stress of 0.85 EB/85 °C/24 h.
