Abstract

In order to improve the oxidation/ablation behavior of ZrB2-MoSi2 coating, Yb2O3 was introduced and its oxidation/ablation resistance was investigated under different high-temperature environments, including air furnace, plasma flame and laser, and compared with ZrB2-MoSi2 coating. The results indicated that the Yb2O3 additive significantly improved the oxidation resistance of ZrB2-MoSi2 coating, as proved by the reduced thickness and the dense structure of oxide scale. The improvement can be attributed to the fact that the Yb2O3 additive decreased the vaporization of borosilicate glasses and help forming dense solid scale, then enhanced the oxygen diffusion resistance of the oxide scale.
