Abstract

The present investigation is primarily aimed to study the effect of superficially Y2O3 coated specimens on the high temperature corrosion behavior of normalized and tempered 2.25Cr–1Mo steel in oxidation–sulfidation (SO2 + O2) mixed gas environment. The isothermal high temperature corrosion study of uncoated as well as Y2O3 coated specimens were carried out in SO2 + O2 environment at 973 K for 150 h. The post corroded specimens were characterized in SEM, EDS and XRD. The result shows the significant improvement of corrosion resistance of the Y2O3 coated specimen in comparison to the uncoated one. The thermal cycling behavior of the uncoated, and Y2O3 coated specimens were also examined up to three cycles in the same environment for 100 h. The result shows the inferior corrosion resistance along with extensive scale spallations of the uncoated specimens, while the Y2O3 coated specimen shows significant improvement of the corrosion resistance under thermal cycling. The mechanism corrosion in presence of Y2O3 coating has been explained in details.
