Abstract

An earlier report claimed that the cells of Streptococcus mutans became adapted to the use of xylitol after a period of four to five months (MAKINEN, J Dent Res 51: 403-408, 1972). Later experiments showed that no adaptation to the metabolizing of this polyol was involved.
