Abstract
PURPOSE: This study was to investigate the effect of weight loss on exercise capacity and erythropoietin. METHODS: The subjects for this study were divided into 2 groups: Helicobacter pylori infection group(n=1 8, HPIG), Helicobacter pylori non infection group(n=16, HPNIG) for 3 weeks. The method of weight loss(5–7% of each subjects) performed exercise, diet and sauna. The change of exercise capacity such as VO2max, peak power, mean power and erythropoietin have been measured before and after weight loss(the 1st week, 2nd week and 3rd week respectively). Data analysis were independent t-test and ANCO VA. RESULTS: 1. VO2 max, peak power and mean power were shown tendency of increasing in two groups after 3 weeks of weight loss, but there were no significant difference. 2. Erythropoietin was shown a case of increasing in two groups after 3 weeks of weight loss, but after 3 weeks only HPIG had been increased as significant difference. Also, erythropoietin was significantly higher in HPIG than that of HPNIG after 3 weeks of weight loss. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that Helicobacter pylori has emerged as a new cause of iron deficiency anemia. That is, Helicobacter pylori may have a role in causing anemia in weight grade players. Therefore, screening for Helicobacter pylori should be extended to cover the players had iron deficiency anemia.
