Abstract

The effect of water radiolysis on corrosion of stainless steel is discussed in connection with oxygen dependant intergranular stress corrosion cracking. The effect of radiation and water radiolysis on activity transport in nuclear power systems is also discussed. A great number of investigations have been made in order to study the effect of radiation of corrosion of Zircaloy and it has been found that corrosion is increased in-pile by a factor of 3–8. A mechanism is discussed to explain this acceleration, based on water radiolysis and the participation of O − 2.
