Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effects of the parameters of washing followed by hot-air drying on the NaCl percentage, whiteness, and water content of dried salt. A comparison of local and imported salts was also conducted during the washing process. In addition, this study also determined the optimal operating parameters for salt washing plant application. The salt washing process was investigated under various operating parameters: particle size (1–0.1 mm), water salinity (0–26.3%), washing duration (60–180 s), washing stirring speed (40–72 rpm), and a number of washing stages (single and double stages). The laboratory experiments were conducted by referring to salt processing in the salt washing plant. This study emphasizes that particle size and water salinity have the most significant effects on salt quality and quantity during the washing process. Increasing the washing duration by more than 180 s did not improve performance and increased salt quantity loss. Increasing the washing stirring speed and the number of washing stages in a specific appropriate range could improve salt quality without increasing capital and operational costs. Based on the study’s results, a recommendation is made for industrial applications and the government to improve the quality of salt.
