Abstract

Volume loss primarily depends on the characteristics of soil and rock and the method of construction of the tunnel. Ground settlement during the construction of the tunnel is highly influenced by volume loss. Various researchers have suggested typical ranges of volume loss for different types of soil and rock. But these suggestions cannot be applied to every ground condition. Therefore, the prediction of volume loss is very important for the accurate estimation of ground settlement. A section of the Delhi metro underground tunnel, situated on the yellow line, has been taken in this study for analysis. In the present study, the effect of volume loss during the construction of the tunnel on the ground settlement has been studied. Finite element analysis has been performed using PLAXIS software. The elastic and elasto-plastic constitutive models have been adopted for simulating the behavior of soil. Computed results have been presented and discussed in the form of displacements of soil and tunnel and stress concentration surrounding the tunnel. The results obtained by finite element analysis have been compared with the available closed-form solution.KeywordsVolume lossTunnelsPLAXISStress concentration
