Abstract

A pile of circular cross-section, made of a linear elastic material subjected to torsional loadings is considered. The first variations of an angle of the pile twist and a torque at a specified cross-section of the pile due to an increment of the pile length are derived. The considerations are based on the calculus of variations with moving boundaries. The sensitivity analysis developed enables the calculation of changes in the quantities under consideration due to the pile end shifts without a full re-analysis of the pile. A detailed discussion of a pile embedded in multilayered soil is also presented. The accuracy of the approximation of the change of the angle of the pile top twist due to the pile length variation is investigated.
