Abstract

The studies carried out on Sterculia urens Roxb. and different treatments were given to know their effects on germination. The laboratory experiment were also conducted to evaluate the seed germination and storage techniques for S. urens. Due to the economic importance and low frequency in nature many attempts are being made to conserve this species and at the same time put in extensive cultivation .In this connection an attempts were made to study the germination potential of the species . The different treatments has been tried such as small incision on seed coat , scarification on sand paper for 5 mts soaking in water 800 ° c for 5 mts treatment with concentrated H SO for 5 mts . Thio urea 12 hrs concentration o.5 % and Thio urea 0.1% for 12 hrs KNO 0.5% for 2 4 3 12 hrs were tried out of which small incision on seed coat , scarification in scarifier 5 mts the treatment with H SO 2 4 Thio urea , KNO and GA was found significant to increase, the germination percentage as compared to control. 3 3 Seeds of Sterculia urens Roxb. with 6% moisture content treated with (i) captan @ 2g/ kg (ii) activated clay at 1:100 ratio (iii) activated clay and Bavistin@ 2g/kg each cowdung ash at 1:10 ratio were compared for storability with (iv) untreated control. The containers included (i) cloth bags (ii) polythene bag of 700 gauge. Seeds treated with captan gave 52 and 56 percent germination in cloth and polythene bags respectively even after 48 month of storage and differed significantly from all other treatments.
