Abstract
One of the most important properties of a moisture-proof paper is a barrier property which is an ability to protect the packed goods by impeding the transmission of water vapor, oxygen, water, etc. Also a moisture-proof paper should be harmless and recyclable. To manufacture eco-friendly moisture-proof paper with good barrier property, we intended to replace wax emulsion by styrene-butadiene latex and inorganic pigment. We prepared the moisture-proof papers by three different coating methods: dispersion coating of SB latex; single coating of mixture of SB latex and inorganic pigment; and double coating which consists of pre-coating of inorganic pigment and top-coating of SB latex. The barrier properties and the mechanical properties were evaluated. Among these three methods, the double coated sheet showed the lowest water vapor transmission rate and Cobb value. Moreover, the double coated moisture-proof paper showed good mechanical properties. With a proper incorporation of inorganic pigment as pre-coating layer, moisture- proof paper with better barrier properties could be prepared.
