Abstract

The nucleonic promiscuity factor P = NpNn/(Np + Nn), where Np(Nn) is the number of valence protons (neutrons) or holes, is shown to be a useful parameter in the description of the mass number dependence of nuclear binding energies. This means that most of the deviation from a smooth mass number dependence is caused by the isoscalar interaction between valence protons and neutrons.
