Abstract

An analysis of n ≥ 1 free-boundary modes in Heliotron-E-like configurations using the stellarator expansion code STEP is given. It is shown that an axisymmetric quadrupol field improves the stability properties of these high-shear equilibria. The corresponding vacuum quadrupole field is used to find vacuum field configurations with an average magnetic well of (ΔV' / V')min = -4 % .
