Abstract

With the introduction of every new item in the world issues of its reliability arise, a product gains popularity only if customer or end user is guaranteed of its performance by vendor. To apply same on the polymeric insulators many vendors and researchers are estimating their biological life while also claiming long expectancy features in market. To favor use of these by power companies in Pakistan a research was started at UET, Taxila Pakistan about three years ago. Many useful findings have come till now. This paper presents the results of one of the test performed on polymeric insulators in which degradation due to UV was studied by placing differently polluted samples in a chamber. Samples were passed under different levels of UV radiations and other stresses like humidity, temperature etc., relating closely to those found commonly in environment of Pakistan. Then samples were analyzed using sophisticated material testing techniques like FTIR, hydrophobicity etc. The paper also describes details of experimental setup, results achieved. The results achieved from FTIR were then approximated to some trend line, to find an equation for aging profile, using mathematical tools and ages of energized and un energized samples were predicted
