Abstract

High plantar pressures have been cited as one of the main causes of ulcers in diabetic feet ( Veves et al., 1992 Veves et al. Diabetologia. 1992; 35: 660-663 Crossref PubMed Scopus (558) Google Scholar ). Also, shod condition reduces peak plantar pressure relative to barefoot condition ( Burnfield et al., 2004 Burnfield et al. Clinical Biomechanics. 2004; 19: 78-84 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (234) Google Scholar ). Furthermore, therapeutic footwear has been recommended to diabetic patients as an attempt to prevent ulceration. However, the question regarding their effectiveness still remains, since Reiber et al., 2002 Reiber et al. JAMA. 2002; 287: 2552-2558 Crossref PubMed Scopus (178) Google Scholar found no difference between usual and therapeutic footwear in patients with foot ulcer history. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of therapeutic footwear in the decrease of the peak plantar pressure in diabetic neuropathic feet during gait. We hypothesized that subjects who wear therapeutic footwear present lower plantar pressure than subjects who wear usual shoes.
