Abstract In the conventional models derived for the synchronous machine, it is assumed that all the mutual couplings on each of the direct and quadrature axes are equal. This assumption is satisfactory for calculation of the armature quantities, but it is insufficient in calculating the field circuit quantities. Hence, an extra mutual inductance is considered between the field and the damper winding. The model parameters are derived and the effect of the extra mutual inductance is obtained on the eigenvalues of the short-circuit model and the model of a synchronous machine connected to an infinite-bus.
