Abstract

The invention pertains to a method for synthesising vanadium phosphorus oxide (VPO) catalyst using an ultrasonic irradiation approach and comparing phase composition and hydrocarbon oxidation activity to a traditionally synthesised catalyst. The ultrasonic irradiation method has been identified to create a catalyst with superior surface constitution and enhanced hydrocarbon conversionin a much shorter time of 3 h than the traditional heating method, which takes 24 h. The nature of catalyst influences product selectivity, with an integration comprising (VO)2P2O7 (V4+) and VOPO4 (V5+) being optimum for high rate of conversion. Under ideal reaction conditions, 89% selectivity to maleic anhydride and a 39% conversion rate were obtained.
