Abstract

The effectiveness of a tuned mass damper in suppressing wind-induced building motion was examined through both a mathematical analysis and a wind tunnel test. The dependence of the optimized design parameters on the characteristics of random excitaion was indicated in the first part. A 1:1000 scaled aeroelastic model of CAARC standard tall building was chosen for the wind tunnel test to demonstrate the damper's effectiveness. It is also interesting to find that even with this small scale the test results show good agreement with the prviously published CAARC results from the other institutions.
