Abstract

Formalin treatment of exposed stylets of anesthetized Myzus persicae (Sulzer) apterae or nymphs, which had fed on Swiss chard plants infected with sugar beet yellows virus, resulted in a depression in virus transmission; but it also depressed frequency and depth of stylet penetration during the first few hours of inoculation access time to test plants. Because of the treatment-feeding interaction, it was not possible to determine whether or not this semipersistent aphid-borne virus is stylet-borne or internally translocated prior to transmission.
