Abstract

Powdered Ti-based carbonitride and carboxide solid solutions were produced from milled mixtures of graphite and TiO2 via carbo-nitridation. The thermodynamic interactions in the solid solutions were calculated and compared with those of the corresponding TiC–TiO and TiC–TiN mixtures. Carbon and oxygen had low mutual affinity in the Ti(CO) B1 crystal structure, inducing strong positive deviation from ideal mixing behavior in their activity curves and high infrared radiation. In contrast, carbon and nitrogen showed high mutual affinity in the Ti(CN) B1 crystal structure. Strong negative deviation from ideal mixing behavior in their activity curves and low infrared radiation were caused. Consequently, the infrared radiation is significantly affected by the thermodynamic activity.
