Abstract
SummaryA study was conducted to determine the most appropriate time, and hence duration of bending branches on 3-year-old ‘Fuji Mishima’ apple (Malus × domestica Borkh.) trees to control vegetative growth as well as to improve light penetration and fruit yield. Branches of ‘Fuji Mishima’ apple trees were tied-down at an angle between 120° – 150° from the axis of the tree trunk 0, 15, 30, and 45 d after full bloom (DAFB). The most appropriate time for branch bending was 15 DAFB in terms of reducing tree vigour, increased light penetration, and crop density. Bending at 30 or 45 DAFB caused vegetative tree growth similar to that in untreated trees, resulting in less flower bud development in the subsequent season.
