Abstract

The spectral distribution of the M\ossbauer radiation emitted from a radiating nucleus when it is in the excited vibrational level of a lattice normal mode has been considered theoretically. In obtaining the results, the relevant correlation functions, which include the thermal of phonons, are calculated in the harmonic approximation. Results are presented for the line shapes of the zero-, one-, and two-phonon-assisted M\ossbauer transitions. The relaxation splitting is absent in our results and the narrowing of the zero-phonon M\ossbauer line never exceeds \ensuremath{\sim}8% of the natural linewidth.
