Abstract

Abstract The effect has been studied of the sign-variable mechanical loading upon the magnitude of the radiation erosion of the aluminium and niobium surfaces under the action of a helium ion beam of 175 and 100 keV, respectively The considerable effect of external loading upon the surface flaking of aluminium has been shown. So at the irradiation dose of 6.25.1018 ion/cm2 on the surface of the loaded specimen the destruction of two layers of material, corresponding to the average projected range of helium ions in aluminium, is observed while three destroyed layers are observed on the unloaded specimen. The effect of mechanical loading upon the behaviour of the gas bubbles in material is discussed.
