Abstract

Objective To evaluate the effects of safety and availability with accepting the optimal time of dressing change after PICC insertion. Methods A comprehensive systematic bibliographic search of medical literature from databases of CNKI (1994 to 2011),Wanfang database (1990 to 2011) and VIP database (1989 to 2011) was conducted to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) related to the different time of dressing change after PICC insertion. The quality of RCTs inserted was assessed and meta-analysis was conducted by Rev Man 4.2 software. Results Six RCTs involving 748 patients were included. The results of meta-analysis showed that:a) There was a significant difference of infection incidence between dressing change in twice a week and in once a week (OR =0.64,95 % CI =0.40 ~ 1.05) ; there was no significant incidence difference of skin red and swollen, phlebitis between dressing change in twice a week and in once a week (OR =0.95,(95 % CI =0.46 ~1.93).Conclusions The meta-analysis of current medical literature in china shows that dressing change in twice a week can reduce the incidence of infection, although there is no significant effect in the aspect of incidence of skin red and swollen. Key words: PICC ; Time of dressing change; Safety ; Availability; Meta-analysis
