Abstract

Sordaria fimicola is a homothallic fungus and when a cross is made between two strains a heterokaryotic zone is formed in which the crossing occurs. This grades into homokaryotic regions on either side where self-fertilization occurs within each parent. By selecting clusters of asci from the parts of the heterokaryotic region adjoining the homokaryons it has been found that the pattern of conversion at the grey (g) spore colour locus can differ greatly from one side of the heterokaryotic region to the other. Moreover, this effect of the nuclear composition of the heterokaryon affected alleles h5 and g7 quite differently. Flanking marker behaviour was also influenced.
