Abstract
A numerical method of computing ray paths by geometric optics in a cylindrically homogeneous medium is outlined, and then applied in extending Lee's investigation of the disturbance to a high frequency sound field by an internal wave field [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 33, 677–681 (1961)]. In particular, the changes in the ray paths as the wave field propagates between the source and the receiver are displayed on a cathode-ray tube. The resulting fluctuation in the sound intensity field due to the translation of the medium is computed in order to illustrate the signal variance caused by the phenomenon.
