Abstract

ABSTRACT We examine the effect of the multilateral surveillance of national trade policies (MSTP) – under the umbrella of the World Trade Organization (WTO) – on national trade policies. The analysis has used an unbalanced panel dataset of 137 countries over the period from 1997 to 2020, and the feasible generalized least squares approach. It has revealed that the transparency exercise brought about by the WTO’s MSTP has been instrumental in promoting trade policy liberalization in WTO member states, especially in non-poorest countries, and non-African countries.
