Abstract

The electric quadrupole moment of the deuteron was discovered here at Columbia University about 30 years ago.1 The existence of this moment showed that the deuteron wave function has a D-wave component due to a tensor force in the neutron-proton interaction.2 In the standard notation a deuteron with angular momentum component Jz = M has the wave function Open image in new window where Open image in new window is the tensor operator and u and w are the S- and D-wave radial wave functions respectively. The deuteron’s form factors are defined by the relation Open image in new window where Open image in new window is the spherical or monopole form factor and Open image in new window is the quadrupole form factor. These two form factors have been studied extensively in connection with elastic electron deuteron scattering.3
